It's been a long couple of months without NHL action and with yesterday's announcement that the AHL has cancelled the remainder of the 2019-20 season with no champs to be crowned, many have begun to speculate whether or not the NHL will be next.

While it's true that the AHL is it's own organization, separate from the NHL, when one professional sports organization shuts down due to a global pandemic, it stands to reason that other organizations may at the very least discuss the possibility of following suit.

According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, the NHL-NHLPA Return to Play Committee was scheduled to meet on Wednesday, but has decided to move up the meeting to Tuesday afternoon.

It's possible that the NHL still very much intends to do whatever it takes to resume play, whether that means delaying the start of the 2020-21 season, expediting and shortening the current season and/or the first 2 rounds of the playoffs, holding games only in select cities and ordering rigorous testing of players and staff, banning fighting and mandating full face shields, or just waiting it out until July/August before resuming play with no fans in attendance.

The alternative is that the NHL and the NHLPA may err on the side of caution here and officially shut it down and have no Stanley Cup champion for the first time since the '04-'05 lockout.

Whichever side the coin lands on, we expect to have an update on the situation following this afternoon's meeting.
