Mackenzie Blackwood has had a fantastic rookie season for the New Jersey Devils this season, despite the team's struggles. Though he is a pending restricted free agent, he made it clear he wants to remain with the team for a long time.

“I love playing here, and I'd love to play here for a long time so I'm sure we can figure something out and hopefully it can go smoothly.”

There is no question the Devils management feels the same, and is likely trying to get an extension done with the 23-year-old goaltender done as soon as possible. In his first full season in the NHL, Blackwood has been outstanding, posting a 2.77 goals against average (GAA) to go with a .915 save percentage (SV%) and a 22-14-8 record. His play got increasingly stronger as the season went on, and there is some talk that he may be a Calder Trophy finalist.

Blackwood has been a part of the Devils organization since they took him in the second round (42nd) at the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He also played in 23 games with the Devils last year, posting a 2.61 GAA and a .918 SV%. The young goaltender has an extremely bright future ahead of him, and it wouldn't be surprising to see a deal get done sooner than later.
