Detroit Tigers designated hitter Miguel Cabrera doesn't like to be bothered in the offseason, and he got his point across by giving his hitting coach Dave Vavra, a fake number.

"All winter long, I would call him and text him and I'd get no reply," Vavra told MLive.com. "Then in spring, I said, 'How come you didn't answer my calls?' He said, 'Because I gave you someone else's number.' I said, 'OK, I hear you.'"

Vavra noted that the veteran slugger still hasn't responded to any of his calls or texts, but the coach said he's heard positive news about Cabrera with baseball on hiatus.

"My sources say he's doing well, but I can't confirm that," Vavra said. "He came in in such good shape and dedicated to getting himself back to good physical condition so that he could compete. That was great to see. I can't see him deviating away from that."

In February, the 37-year-old Cabrera said he that he was back to his 2015 playing weight after making changes to his diet. Last season, he missed 26 games due to right knee and biceps issues.

The two-time American League MVP appeared in only 38 games in 2018, before undergoing season-ending surgery to repair a ruptured biceps tendon.
