Montreal Set to Make Final Decision on Carey Price After Signing Dach
The Montreal Canadiens earlier locked up C Kirby Dach to a contract extension, and they subsequently put themselves $10.2 million over the NHL's salary cap, the most expensive payroll in the league. Their entire plan is outright reliant on offing G Carey Price's hefty $10.5M from their books. Price is injured long-term, and the notion that his career is over grows stronger each day.
Per Arpon Basu of The Athletic, Montreal plans to place Carey Price on LTIR this afternoon during their 12p press conference. Moving Price to LTIR would render the Canadiens cap-compliant to start the 2022-23 season.
Given Price's extended time on the sidelines and the pessimism around his injury, the idea of him ever returning to play seems lost at this point. After him, the Habs will rely on Jake Allen and Sam Montembault, the same tandem that placed 25th of 32 just a season ago.
There remains an outside chance the NHL hounds Montreal over Price's status as well. Last season, it was reported that the league was 'very active' in policing the LTIR in efforts to mitigate teams exploiting loopholes and gaining unfair or undue cap relief. While Price is LTIR-eligible, the league could still intervene at any moment.
Nevertheless, for now Price's massive tag will provide the Habs with much needed relief, but they are still extremely tight the salary cap, a projected ~$260,000 below the ceiling. Which is pretty rough, considering the team is not expected to even sniff the playoffs. Kent Hughes has had a productive summer, but the heavy work remains to be done.
