The Edmonton Oilers today introduced the establishment of its own Hall of Fame, honoring Oilers legends of the past as well as Oilers of the present and future. The Oilers' history is, after all, legendary.
Per the team release: "Created to honour outstanding contributions or service to the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club by past members of the organization, the Edmonton Oilers Hall of Fame may include players, coaches, trainers, staff, executives or any other person whose role or service in the organization since its founding in 1972 is recognized as extraordinary."
Additionally, the Oilers named the inaugural induction class of 2022, beginning with ten well-deserving franchise legends. The banner inductees are: Al Hamilton, Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Grant Fuhr, Paul Coffey, Mark Messier, Glenn Anderson, Kevin Lowe, Glen Sather and Rod Phillips. Each was inducted 'automatically by virtue of their respective Oilers banner honour.'
Further to the announcement, two additional inductees will be voted upon and revealed before Oilers training camp on September 20. The vote will be conducted by the Oilers Hall of Fame Selection Committee.
"The Oilers Hall of Fame Selection Committee is comprised of 11 individuals appointed based on their significant and varied experience in the game of hockey and the community. Each have been appointed for an initial three-year term and can serve for a maximum of 15 years."
"The Oilers Hall of Fame Selection Committee is comprised of former Oilers Wayne Gretzky, Ron Low, Louie DeBrusk, Chris Joseph, as well as former player and executive Bruce MacGregor, in addition to media members Jim Matheson, Terry Jones, Bob Stauffer and Jason Gregor, as well as community members Chief Wilton Littlechild and two-time Team Canada Olympic gold medalist Shannon Szabados."
Fans will also be able to engage in future nominations. Starting in 2023, Oilers fans will be able to nominate deserving individuals for induction consideration by the Selection Committee. The release stated that further details on that process will be announced at a later date.
Players will become eligible for the Oilers Hall of Fame after being retired five years, non-players can be inducted at any point. The team also clarified that any future banners raised will be reserved -- generally -- in recognition of alumni inducted into the Hall of Fame.
