Former NHLer Peter Holland ends career of Fredrik Styrman
Peter Holland, a former first-round pick (15th overall) of the Anaheim Ducks in 2009, has ended a hockey career in Sweden. In November of 2021, Holland was playing in the SHL when he grabbed opponent Fredrik Styrman during a scrum around the net. Styrman still had his stick in his hands when Holland hit him square in the face with a hard uppercut. Here's video of the incident.
Holland was suspended four games for the incident. Styrman was out for the remainder of the SHL season. He has now announced that his career is over.
"It feels awful that it ended the way it did," said Styrman.
"I still get concussion symptoms when I exert myself and the doctors have advised me not to continue playing."
However, Styrman said he's chosen to move on.
"I can't dwell on it any more. It is what it is. I don't feel sorry for myself. There's so much shit going on in this world, and there are a lot of people worse off than me. But of course I'll miss hockey," he said.
Besides the four game suspension, Holland was also fined just under $4000 USD. Despite being a highly-touted prospect when drafted, Holland struggled to keep a spot in the NHL while he was in North America, bouncing between the big league and the AHL before signing in Russia. He played a total of 15 games in Sweden last season. It appears he is not playing professional hockey this season. Styrman said he plans to concentrate on getting a degree in economics and raising his newborn child now that his hockey career is oveer. He has played professional hockey is Sweden since 2008
