Columbus Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen announced today that the club has signed goaltender Joonas Korpisalo to a two-year contract extension. The deal will pay him $2.2 million next season and $3.4 million the following season. The AAV comes in at $2.8 million.

The soon to be 26-year-old was having a breakout campaign prior to injuring his knee on December 29th. He went into this season as the team's starting goaltender after Sergei Bobrovsky left the team via free agency. He performed extremely well, putting up a 2.60 goals against average, a .911 save percentage and a 19-12-5 record. Those numbers were good enough to help him get voted in to his first ever NHL All-Star Game, but was unable to attend due to his injury.

“Joonas had the opportunity to play a lot of games for us early in the season before he was injured and responded by playing at an All-Star level,” Kekalainen said. “He is a young, talented goaltender with a great work ethic and desire to succeed and we are very excited to see his continued development and improvement moving forward.”

Korpisalo has been a part of the Blue Jackets organization since he was selected in the third-round (62nd) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Him and Elvis Merzlikins have both played spectacular this season and are the main reasons why the Columbus Blue Jackets found themselves in the final wild card position prior to the season being paused.
