This is certainly disappointing news for teams and players alike, although not surprising given that the league was forced to suspend play back on March 12th due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Before this all began, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly had told general managers the cap was expected rise anywhere from $84 to $88.2 million for next season.
A cap jump like that would have helped many teams that are currently spending the maximum money allowed on its players. The fact it is now staying the same will limit which teams can add free agents this offseason. It will also impact players who are free agents this year, as teams will likely not be offering contracts as big as they would have if the salary cap would have increased.
