It seems to be all but a done-deal that defensive prospect Alexander Romanov will be signing his entry-level contract with the Montreal Canadiens shortly. According to Aivis Kalnins, who covers the KHL and European leagues for HockeyBuzz, Romanov was offered an extension with CSKA Moscow and refused to sign.

Romanov was drafted in the 2nd round, 38th overall, by the Habs in 2018. Montreal GM Marc Bergevin was adamant about getting the 20-year-old to make the jump to the NHL next season, going so far as to personally visit him in Russia in an attempt to convince him to sing his ELC.

Romanov isn't expected to put up a lot of points but he has established himself as an excellent defenceman during his short time in the KHL and during two stints with Russia at the World Junior Championships in 2019 and 2020. In 2019, he was named top defenceman of the tournament by the International Ice Hockey Federation, while anchoring Team Russia to a bronze medal.
