Former second-round draft pick (57th overall) Ian Mitchell is forgoing his final year of college hockey in order to sign his entry-level contract. That's according to multiple reports, although it appears the first person to break the story was Barstool Sports' Ryan Brandell.

Mitchell was selected in 2017 by the Chicago Blackhawks. While the ELC has not yet been signed, reports say a verbal agreement with the Hawks is in place and he will leave the University of Denver and turn pro next season.

The 21-year-old right shot defenceman had three excellent years in the NCAA system, amassing 89 points in 116 games. The Alberta native also represented Canada at the Wold Junior Championships in 2018-19, scoring one goals and three points in five games.

Mitchell has been described as a smart, smooth skating, offensive defenseman has all the tools to be a future top four pairing. A comparison within the Blackhawks' organization would be Duncan Keith.
