One month after the cancellation of its 2020 season amidst the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic, the XFL has announced the suspension of all league operations.

In addition to the suspension, XFL COO Jeffery Pollock announced Friday that all league employees have been laid off.

It is expected that employees will receive pay through Sunday, as noted by NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, but the future appears bleak for a league already struggling to substantiate themselves.

While the XFL's original statement following the season's cancellation was hopeful, it's unlikely the league will return to play in future years.

Having failed to achieve success in previous decades, Vince McMahon was anticipating expenses around $500 million over the next three seasons to build the brand. Given the fragile economic state caused by the pandemic, a return of that magnitude is simply improbable.

As per Sportscenter, the league currently has no plans to return for a 2021 season.
