Jacobs family finally agrees to pay part-time staff
The ownership of the Boston Bruins has finally come up with a plan to pay part-time staff at TD Garden while NHL play is suspended. Jeremy Jacobs, who owns the Bruins, as well as TD Garden and the company that provides concessions there, was the last remaining holdout to come up with a plan.
In a statement, the Jacobs family said:
The Jacobs Family has established a $1.5 million fund for the Boston Bruins and TD Garden part-time gameday associates who will be financially burdened if the six remaining regular season Bruins games are not played. We thank our associates for their patience and understanding while we worked through the complexity of this unprecedented situation.
The family has been the subject of a lot of criticism since the NHL suspended play. Jeremy Jacobs alone is worth over $3 billion.
Most full-time staff are able to file for unemployment insurance with a layoff, although there is usually a waiting period. Part-time staff are generally out of luck when games aren't taking place.
The response to the announcement on Twitter was not overly positive, with many pointing out how long it took and accusing the family of having to be publicly shamed into it.
