It's official, number 12 of the Patriots is no longer
Imagine if someone had told you a month ago that soon all the sports leagues would be in forced to shutdown due to a global pandemic and that Tom Brady would be a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The world is really upside down and this NFL signature is living proof of that. After nearly two decades with the New England Patriots organization, number 12 officialy made his new agreement with the Buccaneers' organization earlier this morning.
Rumours surrounding the future of the star quarterback began to intensify when the Patriots suffered a bitter setback against the Tennessee Titans, causing an early exit in the race for the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Retirement, a new contract for one or two seasons were expected, but the market for free agents didn't seem like an option.
Since January, the Patriots' number 12 has been hiding his game well. The media were trying to get information about the future of the player. The Las Vegas Raiders, the Tennessee Titans and the San Francisco 49ers were plausible destinations for the 43-year-old quarterback.
Again, it was hard to imagine that he could leave Boston after winning no less than six Super Bowls and some even thought that his attachment to New England would take over the "business" side in this case. Indeed, Brady surprised many when he announced through social networks that his football career would continue in a different uniform. Although the Los Angeles Chargers and Miami Dolphins also showed interest in his services, it was the Buccaneers who won the jackpot. The former Pats member will receive $50 million for two years. He will also be eligible for up to $9 million in bonuses.
"Excited, humble and hungry... if there is one thing I have learned about football, it's that nobody cares what you did last year or the year before that... you earn the trust and respect of those around through your commitment every single day," wrote Brady on Instagram on Friday. "I'm starting a new football journey and am thankful for the @buccaneers for giving me an opportunity to do what I love to do."
The 199th pick in the 2000 draft is considered as one of the greatest athletes in his sport. After 20 seasons in Foxborough, number 12 is retiring from the organization after being part of one of the NFL's greatest dynasties: 9 Super Bowl appearances, 6 championships, unprecedented comebacks against the Seahawks and Falcons. It is now time to turn a page of history for the franchise.
