The Mariners announced Wednesday that they were closing down their spring training facilities in Arizona a week after the league was suspended for the COVID-19 pandemic.
General Manager Jerry Dipoto said Thursday, "(We've) effectively told our guys we need you to go into offseason mode psychologically, emotionally and understand whatever time we get back to playing, we'll have time to ramp back up."
Dipoto also said that the bulk of the Mariners 40-man roster had already returned home and that very few players were showing up to the facilities for workouts in recent days. So far, no MLB players have been publicly found to have the coronavirus.
For Dipoto, the biggest decision maker was ensuring that his players would not get hurt trying to get ready for the season whenever it did come. Dipoto made it clear about his players, "We're not going to ask guys to go from, from zero to 60 at the snap of a finger."
The MLB regular season was supposed to begin on March 26. Now, the earliest opportunity for Opening Day is sometime in mid-May.
