Chris Sale to undergo Tommy John Surgery - out for 2020 season
The Boston Red Sox announced Thursday afternoon that starting pitcher Chris Sale will undergo Tommy John surgery. With this news, Sale will miss the entirety of his 2020 campaign, once the season begins following the coronavirus pandemic.

Sale had been shut down for the past two weeks after he had expressed more discomfort with his left elbow. He began workouts again on Monday, just three days before the announcement was made.
In 2019, the 10-year veteran missed the last month and a half of the season after being placed on the injured-list with left elbow inflammation. At that point he held a 4.40 ERA over 147 innings, the worst for the pitcher in his career.
This is the first year for Sale's new contract extension, a five-year deal worth $145 million which he signed in March 2019.
