MLB to pay minor leaguers through league suspension
One of the key on-going conversations around the MLB was whether or not the minor league players would be compensated while the league was postponed in prevention of the virus COVID-19. Minor leaguers had not received a paycheque since the 2019 season ended. However, Thursday afternoon the MLB announced a league-wide initiative that will create a level of uniform compensation for minor league players.
The minor league players who fall under the Minor League Uniform Player Contract will receive a lump sum equal to the allowances that would have been paid through April 9. This covers from the beginning of the postponement until when the minor league season would being.
There are some exceptions to the league payment, those include players who: are non-40-man-roster players who already receive Major League allowances; players who are currently receiving housing, food or other services from Clubs; and players who were not participating in, or expected to participate in, Minor League Spring Training.
There has not been a decision yet on if/how the minor league players will be paid past April 9, but the league is in discussion with all 30 clubs to figure out a league-wide plan.
This comes days after the MLB announced a joint, $1 million MLB-MLBPA fund to help quickly send food to those impacted by the COVID-19 crisis, and the 30 team $30 million plan to help support ballpark staff.
