The United States Hockey League (USHL) has been shut down for the remainder of the season, commissioner Tom Garrity said in a statement Wednesday morning. This comes just a day after the Western Hockey League (WHL) and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) came out with similar announcements yesterday.

The one noticeable difference between the cancellations of the USHL and both the WHL/QMJHL is that while the Canadian leagues have so far only cancelled the regular season, the USHL cancelled both regular season and playoffs. Garrity mentioned in his statement that this decision was a necessity for safety.

“This decision was not an easy one to make, but was a necessity in order to keep our athletes, staffs and fans in all 16 of our communities safe amid this international health risk. While we believe our product is the best junior hockey that fans can view, we also understand the health of our athletes, employees, fans and communities is more important during this time.”

Unfortunately, this decision was inevitable as it was for all the other leagues worldwide, making the same tough choice due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The USHL did mention that they will still hand out end-of-year awards to their players. There is no date for the award announcements yet, but it is expected to happen in the coming weeks.
