Since shutting its doors in prevention of Corona Virus transmission, the NHL has held to the plan of trying to return to play as soon as possible. Now, according to Sportsnet's Chris Johnston, that plan may have changed.

Johnston tweeted Monday morning that the NHL has told its players they are permitted to return home, to any country, but that they have to remain in self-quarantine until the end of March once they arrive.

The NHL's original plan was to wait two weeks and see if they could get back onto the ice and not lose much time. With this new plan, the league has changed its timeline. Johnston says the league is now aiming for players to be able to return to their training camps in late-April to prepare for a return to play. The hope is that when the world situation has calmed down, the teams will be able to open training facilities for small groups of players, as they do in the off-season.

This new directive from the NHL makes it a realization that if the season is to resumes this year at all, it won't be soon.
