Ilya Mikheyev reportedly seeking a big contract in free agency

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ilya Mikheyev is set to hit the open market on July 13th. With each passing day, it's more and more likely that he won't be returning to the Maple Leafs.

On Monday, TSN's Pierre LeBrun reported that Mikheyev is seeking a multi-year contract with an annual average value in the $4.75-$5.5 million range.

"On pending UFA winger Ilya Mikheyev, my understanding is that if he hits the open market, his agent Dan Milstein would be looking for a multi-year deal in the $4.75 M AAV to $5.5 M AAV range..." LeBrun said.

While Mikheyev had the best of his three NHL seasons in 2021-22, recording 32 points (21 goals, eleven assists) in 53 games, it seems like a bit of a stretch to be asking for $4.75-$5.5 million per season. For a comparison, Evgeny Dadonov signed a three-year contract worth $5 million AAV in 2020. Prior to signing that contract, Dadonov already had three seasons of 25+ goals.
