The top hockey league in Sweden has decided to make some changes to its upcoming playoffs in the face of spreading concerns about COVID-19. The post-season, which was to begin Saturday, has been delayed until March 24th. It will no longer feature best of seven series.

The new format will have the teams compete in a best of three play-in round, which is standard for the league. Those that advance will then take part in best of five series instead of the usual best of seven.

The league states the new format was decided on in conjunction with all teams involved. It is hoping that the delay will allow for restrictions to be lifted, meaning fans will be allowed back in the stands. The final games of the regular season are being played in empty arenas.

"We continue to listen to the experts and follow the guidelines developed by the Public Health Authority and the government," said SHL CEO Michael Marchal. "Nobody wants empty stands, but health always goes first and we listen and obey the directives the authorities give."
