Flyers prospect Ivan Fedotov detained by military police in home country

He just signed a one-year entry-level deal with the Philadelphia Flyers in May, but there is reason to be concerned after word that goaltender Ivan Fedotov is in trouble in his home country of Russia. According to reports, military police have took up positions in St. Petersburg in areas where they knew Fedotov was likely to be and arrested him on Friday.

"It is noted that the detention was initiated by the military prosecutor's office, which 'has sufficient grounds to consider Fedotov an army dodger'," said Sport24.ru.

According to Max Snedden, a reporter with the Financial Times based in Russia, "He was arrested for draft-dodging – CSKA players are technically in the military – and taken to the recruitment office"

CSKA has a history with the Russian military, and is still called the "Red Army" team by many fans.

This is very bad news for Fedotov. It is a very serious offence in most countries to skip out on military service, and Russia is worse than many.

The 25-year-old was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers in the seventh round in 2015. It wasn't until May that he signed an entry level deal, spending the last six years in the KHL. He won the Gagarin Cup with CSKA Moscow this past season, and a silver medal with Team Russia at the Winter Olympics.

"We are sure that the competent authorities will look into this situation," a CSKA spokesperson told reporters in Russia.

I'm certain there will be more to this story at a later time. This is still very much unfolding.
