Bruins President Cam Neely hints that Coach Cassidy may be replaced; Sweeney appears safe

Boston Bruins President Cam Neely answered some questions on the team's future Thursday and some of the things he said certainly leave from room for interpretation. First off, Neely was asked about the team's coaching and whether changes needed to be made for next season. The answer was a yes.

"I think we have to look at changing how we do some things," said Neely. "I think Bruce [Cassidy] is a fantastic coach, but I do think we need to make some changes with how we coach."

Whether that means changes in staffing, or whether the Bruins will ask Cassidy to change up some of his plans remains to be seen. One thing that is clear, Boston's General Manager isn't going anywhere. Neely stated clearly in the interview that the plan is to extend Don Sweeney, although he didn't say for how long.

Bruins fans have legitimate questions regarding Sweeney and some of his draft choices over the past few years. As one fan pointed out in a response to a question regarding keeping Sweeney but ditching Cassidy, Sweeney's track record when it comes to drafting is poor. Out of the 43 picks he's made since becoming GM, just five of them have played more than 100 games in the NHL. Just three of them have become full-time NHLers in Jake DeBrusk, Brandon Carlo, and Charlie McAvoy. Four if you count Jeremy Swayman in there. Since 2018, Sweeney has made 21 draft picks. They have zero NHL games between them combined.
