Matchup of the Night RECAP -- Colorado @ Calgary

FINAL SCORE: COL 2 // 1 CGY

Oh boy, this matchup was as advertised. I know this opinion probably relegates me into the minority, but so be it: I love low scoring hockey games. And this one was a goaltending masterclass. Jacob Markstrom stopped 28 of 30, and opposing netminder Darcy Kuemper stood on his head, stopping 44 of 45 Flames' shots.

Both goalies were perfect through 29 minutes, but in minute 30 Tyler Toffoli absolutely hammered one past Kuemper, the only one he would surrender. The goal came on a 5-on-3 for Calgary after a considerable amount of offensive zone possession time.

With Kuemper standing on his head & Colorado missing Landeskog, Mackinnon, & a few others, the Avs needed a new hero. Well how about one unsung hero named Valeri Nichuskin? The burly Russian potted two clutch goals that would ultimately decide the game. He's having an amazing season, & he is a massive contributor on a hugely successful Avalanche team.
