On today's episode of TSN's "Insider Trading," analyst Chris Johnston confirmed the NHL's ever-present salary cap will increase incrementally next season. This comes after a multiple seasons of a "flat cap," which has hamstrung many GMs league-wide; GMs who constructed their rosters under the safe assumption that the cap would rise at its typical annual rate of 1-4%. This of course was one of many setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The increase will add $1M to each team's available salary cap. While this may seem insignificant, I'm sure I can speak for GMs around the league when I say any bump is a good bump. Teams have really struggled under the flat cap, resulting in unprecedented transactions.

The NHL signed exclusive broadcasting partnerships with media behemoths ESPN and TNT, and that undoubtedly drew up new money for the league. Additionally, stadium capacities have increased back to 100% with some exceptions. At any rate, these two catalysts likely factored into the League's ability to ease cap restraints on its clubs. The hope is to eventually recuperate the losses from the pandemic and resume the annual increases to which we grew accustomed.
