With the trade deadline just two weeks away, New Jersey Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald told The Athletic he had a difficult conversation with defenceman P.K. Subban over the weekend.

"I sat down with P.K. [Saturday] and we talked about uncertainty and the deadline and that we're not at a spot where we're looking to extend him at this point," said Fitzgerald.

Subban is on the final year on an eight-year contract signed with the Montreal Canadiens in 2014 that produced a cap hit of $9 million per season. It's a safe bet that Subban will never get that type of money in the NHL again.

Fitzgerald said cutting Subban loose wasn't an easy decision given what he's done for the team and the community over the past three seasons.

"But I told him, 'On the last day, somebody may lose a right-shot D and may call me and if the move makes sense for the New Jersey Devils and makes sense for you to potentially have a chance to win, I have to do what's best for the organization'," said Fitzgerald.

New Jersey will almost certainly have to retain salary in order to deal Subban, but the team is in a situation where that wouldn't be a big deal in order to snag more picks and/or prospects. That said, Fitzgerald stated his phone isn't exactly ringing off the hook for any names leading up to the deadline.

"It's been really quiet, to be quite honest, lately. It's been extremely quiet. But I still make my calls and just check in with teams and see if things have changed from what they were thinking."

Subban's production has dropped off considerably over the past few seasons. His best years came with Montreal in 2014-15, when he had 60 points (15G, 45A) and with Nashville in 2017-18 when he managed 59 points (16G, 43A).
