Colorado Avalanche Head Coach Jared Bednar announced on Sunday that forward Nathan MacKinnon underwent surgery for his facial fracture and will miss the 2022 NHL All-Star Game.

MacKinnon suffered the injury during Wednesday night's overtime win over the Boston Bruins. In the first period, MacKinnon was hit by Bruins forward Taylor Hall, with the Avalanche forward's own stick causing most of the damage.

Hall was initially given a five-minute major and game misconduct, but upon further review, it was downgraded to a two-minute minor for interference. Meanwhile, MacKinnon left the game and did not return.

On Friday, Bednar told the media that MacKinnon had a concussion and facial fracture and he would not play in any of Colorado's next three games. There is still no timetable for his return.

The Halifax, Nova Scotia native was named captain of the Central Division for the 2022 NHL All-Star Game, so it's unclear who will assume that role, but according to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Nashville Predators defenceman Roman Josi will replace MacKinnon on the roster next weekend.

In 31 games this season, MacKinnon has 43 points (9 goals, 34 assists), 12 penalty minutes and is a plus-five.
