Tensions run high after reports of racist remarks hurled at two Canadian players in Slovakia (w/video)

Two Canadian players are at the centre of an incident in the Slovak Extraliga that ended with reports of police being called in. On Sunday, HK Spišská Nová Ves and HK Dukla Michalovce met for the fifth time this season, with Michalovce winning 3-1. However, it was what happened at the end that is being given the most attention. An equipment manager with Michalovce is accused of yelling racist remarks at Matt Petgrave and Arvin Atwal, both Canadians and people of colour. Members of Spišská Nová Ves can be seen in the video below chasing members of Michalovce back to the dressing room following the final buzzer.

Spišská Nová released a statement after the incident stating this isn't the first time Michalovce's sports manager has had these kind of accusations levelled against him.

"It is a disgrace and a failure of some individuals who, by such behaviour, smear the good name of the team, Tipos Extraliga and ice hockey in Slovakia," reads the statement. "The equipment manager of the home team has already been dealt with several times for similar incidents. Our club has in its statutes, among other points, a clause about immediate expulsion of a member of the club if he shows elements of racism."

"Also, based on the delegate's report after yesterday's meeting where verbal and physical assault is mentioned, further racist assault by members of the home club's management team and the organizing service, we have decided to refer the whole situation to our club lawyer. After studying the whole situation we will consider legal action against the selected persons."

Michalovce's management is denying that any racist remarks were used.

Both Petgrave and Atwal bounced around between the AHL and ECHL before joining Spišská Nová Ves for the 2021-22 season.
