A mock trade making the rounds would send Nikita Kucherov to the Maple Leafs for William Nylander, and fans are asking who says no.

Maietta Sports Media put the idea out Sunday. It landed in the middle of a weekend when Kucherov trade talk simply would not go away.

The Lightning star is 33 and has 18 points in 13 games this season, with 4 goals and 14 assists. Tampa Bay sits 8-3-2, and he is a big reason why.

His current deal expires after this season, and that is what keeps the rumors alive. Pierre LeBrun has already weighed in on Nikita Kucherov trade chatter involving the Canadiens, and the reported gap in Nikita Kucherov's contract demands from the Lightning only adds fuel.

Toronto's side of the swap is simple. Nylander has 10 goals in 16 games, and the Maple Leafs are 8-6-2, 12th in the NHL and sixth in the Atlantic Division.

Maietta Sports Media framed the deal with Kucherov signing a new five-year contract at $20 million per season starting in 2027-28.

That new money is the whole point of the exercise. Kucherov's cap hit is $9.5 million now, so Toronto would be paying a premium to lock in a player who turns 34 before the first year of that deal even starts.

Why Tampa Bay says no first

The Lightning have more to lose than a name on a sweater. They are 4th in the Atlantic, 6-0-0 at home, and they fell 5-4 in a shootout at Nashville on Saturday. A team playing like that is not shopping its best player.

Nylander is 30, signed through 2031-32 at $11.5 million, and he is producing. He is a very good winger, no doubt. He is not Kucherov, and Tampa Bay trading its franchise scorer for him is a bad idea.

The career numbers show the gap: 1,141 points in 892 games for Kucherov against 712 in 766 for Nylander. Toronto would be buying a ceiling that few players in the league can match, and the five-year commitment is the only real argument against it.

For Toronto, it is a fun idea with a real price tag. For Tampa Bay, it is not close. Both teams are back on the ice Tuesday, with the Lightning hosting Detroit and the Maple Leafs hosting Utah.
