Shane Wright and Matthew Wood are at the center of a Kraken-Predators trade in the works, according to Elliotte Friedman.

Friedman said he's hearing Seattle and Nashville are working on something that will involve both players. No other names, no framework and no timeline have been reported, so the shape of the deal is still unknown.

The Kraken had already been in the rumor mill. David Pagnotta's Tuesday report on the Kraken and a "Shane Wright element" hinted that his name could move.

Wright is a 22-year-old center drafted fourth overall by Seattle in 2022. He has 3 goals and 1 assist through 14 games this season.

Over his NHL career, Wright has 82 points in 183 games with a +15 rating. He has never played a playoff game.

Wood, a 21-year-old right winger, went 15th overall to Nashville in 2023. He has 1 goal and 2 assists in 14 games this season, and both of his points on the power play came on the man advantage.

In Saturday's 5-4 shootout win over Tampa Bay, Wood played 13:00 and put one shot on goal. That's fourth-line usage on a team that needed a bigger push from its depth.

Money matters here too. Wright carries a cap hit of $886,666 and Wood $950,000, and both entry-level deals expire after this season with the players headed to restricted free agency. Neither has signed an extension.

Both clubs are in the middle of a tight early season. Seattle is 8-5-1 but lost 2-6 at Calgary on Friday, while Nashville sits at 5-4-5 with a -5 goal differential.

Why a Wright-Wood swap could reshape two rebuilding rosters

Teams rarely move two recent first-rounders with expiring contracts unless the picture beyond this season is already decided. Seattle clearly has a view on Wright's future, and so does Nashville on Wood's.

Giving up on a fourth overall pick at 22 is a bold call, especially with a center who has been a positive-rated player over 183 games. If the Kraken are selling him, the return needs to be more than a change of scenery.

Our Canadiens-Kraken mock trade involving Shane Wright showed how much interest his name draws. A real deal with the Predators would put that to the test.

Nashville hosts Carolina on Tuesday, and Seattle welcomes Calgary on Wednesday. Any move would likely need to be official before either team takes the ice again.

Should the Kraken trade Shane Wright, a former fourth overall pick, while he's still only 22?
