Kucherov and Stamkos meet on opening faceoff amid trade buzz

Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos were matched up on the opening faceoff Saturday, and the timing was impossible to miss.

B/R Open Ice pointed out the coincidence right away. It came one night after a report on Kucherov's future that has the whole league talking.

Stamkos was the first overall pick of the Lightning in 2008. He now plays for the Predators, which made him the perfect face across the dot for this storyline.

Kucherov, meanwhile, hasn't let the noise touch his production. He has 15 points in 12 games, and the Nikita Kucherov landing spots debate keeps growing by the hour.

Here is where his season stands right now.

The money matters in this story. Kucherov carries a $9,500,000 cap hit that runs through 2026-27, he is set to become an unrestricted free agent at expiry, and no extension has been signed.

Why Kucherov's expiring deal changes the Lightning's math

Trading a player who has four goals and 11 assists this season would be a mistake for a contender. Tampa Bay would be selling a point-a-game producer while he is still producing.

Stamkos is a useful mirror for the conversation. He also sits at 15 points, but in 13 games, with seven goals and three of them on the power play.

Both men were drafted by the Lightning, and both carry big career numbers. Their full NHL résumés tell the story of two franchise pillars who ended up on very different paths.

Stamkos has 1271 career points and 631 goals. Kucherov sits at 1138 points and 404 goals, and he has 177 playoff points to his name.

B/R Open Ice joked that the faceoff was quite the funny coincidence after last night's Kucherov bombshell.

The laughs won't last long for Tampa Bay. The Nikita Kucherov trade request fallout is already putting the front office under a microscope, and his contract still expires after this season with no extension in place.
