The Red Wings have Oliver Kapanen and Adam Engstrom in their sights as Dylan Larkin talks with the Canadiens heat up Friday, according to two sources.
Kris Draper followed four straight Canadiens games, from Montreal to St. Louis. Both sources say Montreal was putting the two young players on display in front of him.
Martin St-Louis even slotted Engstrom in for Arber Xhekaj at one point, and that only fed the speculation.
The 22-year-old defenseman picked up his first point of the season Thursday night in Dallas, an assist that has him at +3 through 7 games.
Kapanen, 23, is still looking for his first point after 6 games.
If those two headline the ask, Kent Hughes should be sprinting to the phone. Neither has locked down a full-time spot yet.
Larkin carries an $8,700,000 cap hit and remains listed out through at least October 31 for a reason that isn't injury-related.
Red Wings reportedly target Oliver Kapanen and Adam Engstrom in Dylan Larkin talks
Montreal isn't on his 10-team list, according to Pierre LeBrun, and that list hasn't changed.
Elliotte Friedman's idea on 32 Thoughts flips the usual order. The Canadiens would agree on terms with Detroit first, then the Red Wings would bring the deal to Larkin for approval.
Friedman pointed to two things moving the needle: the Bell Centre crowd chanting his name, and the forward's desire to finally get this settled.
It's like booking the restaurant before asking whether your date even likes Italian. Bold, but sometimes the reservation does the convincing.
Shawn Horcoff confirmed Thursday that he's had discussions with teams on the list, and with other teams too.
Darren Dreger has described an offer involving two prospects, a first-round pick and a top-nine player.
So where do these two fit in that structure? Detroit is also looking for young centers, and Kapanen fits that bill.
New Jersey is still lurking. Jordan Schmaltz said Thursday he's hearing Larkin will end up with the Devils.
The Canadiens, winners of four straight at 8-3-2, host Pittsburgh on Saturday night.
Detroit's lone trip to the Bell Centre this season ended in a 1-0 shootout loss on October 10. The next time Larkin walks into that building, he might not be the visitor.

Would you trade Oliver Kapanen and Adam Engstrom for Dylan Larkin right now?
