Bill Guerin didn't sound confident about re-signing Quinn Hughes, and the Wild host the Islanders tonight with the question still hanging over the team.
Guerin went on the radio, according to Daily Hive, and didn't exactly sound sure about getting his star defenseman signed. There was no answer on whether Hughes even wants to stay.
That's a rough listen for Minnesota fans. It also fits a pattern, because Guerin's refusal to beg Quinn Hughes to stay already set a cool tone this week.
The clock matters here. Hughes carries a $7,850,000 cap hit through 2026-27, he's a UFA at expiry, and the sheet shows no extension signed.
| GP | G | A | PTS | +/- | |
| 2026-27 | 14 | 3 | 15 | 18 | +8 |
| Career | 521 | 69 | 434 | 503 | +35 |
The production is exactly why this is a big deal. Hughes has 3 goals and 15 assists for 18 points in 14 games, with a +8 rating.
Two of those goals came on the power play, where he's also added 6 assists. Both of his game-winning goals this season are in that 18-point pile.
The Wild aren't exactly a team in crisis, either. They're 9-3-2, third in the NHL, first in the Central Division, and they've won 3 straight.
Why the Wild's silence on Hughes is a risk
Here's the editorial take: when a team is this good and the player is this central, vague answers from the GM are a bad look. Winning only makes the uncertainty louder.
Maybe Guerin is protecting his negotiating position. Maybe he genuinely doesn't know. Neither option is comforting if you're holding a ticket in St. Paul.
Hughes himself has sounded warmer. Hughes' warmer comments on his Wild future suggested the door was open, which makes Guerin's tone stand out even more.
So who blinks first? A 7th overall pick from 2018 with 503 career points doesn't hit free agency quietly, and every contender with cap space will know it.
For now, the Wild have the Islanders at home tonight, where they're 4-0-0 this season. The Hughes question won't go away with another win.
Should the Wild stop waiting and offer Quinn Hughes an extension right now?
