Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is back, and Edmonton Oilers head coach Mike Babcock has already reshuffled Colton Dach's place in the lineup.
The veteran forward's return gives Edmonton a much-needed boost down the middle, but it also changes the responsibilities of several players who helped cover his absence.
Colton Dach is among those affected. After receiving opportunities higher in the lineup, the young forward has moved back into a fourth-line centre role.
Babcock has placed Nugent-Hopkins between Zach Hyman and Kasperi Kapanen, giving the Oilers a more established second line behind Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
Edmonton Oilers make a tough call on Colton Dach
The decision also allows Edmonton to keep its biggest offensive weapons together instead of separating them to compensate for injuries.
For Dach, the adjustment isn't necessarily a setback. Babcock has spoken positively about his physical play, work ethic, and ability to handle different assignments.
Dach's versatility could become increasingly valuable as Edmonton gets healthier. His ability to play centre or wing gives Babcock options when adjusting the bottom six.
The coach has also emphasized the importance of building confidence among younger players, including Isaac Howard, whose ice time has fluctuated during tight games.
Nugent-Hopkins brings a different dimension. His experience, defensive awareness, and power-play presence give Edmonton more flexibility without asking its top stars to carry every shift.
Still, Babcock has been careful with returning players. After extended absences, regaining game speed and handling heavier minutes can take time.
That creates an opportunity for Dach to remain involved rather than disappear into a limited role. His physical presence and forechecking remain assets Edmonton needs.
The bigger question is whether Babcock can distribute minutes effectively while keeping his offensive leaders productive and his depth forwards engaged.
With Nugent-Hopkins back and Dach fighting for a larger assignment, Edmonton's internal competition is getting tighter. Babcock now has more choices, but those choices also bring tougher lineup decisions.
Should Mike Babcock give Colton Dach a bigger role despite Ryan Nugent-Hopkins returning?
