Auston Matthews and Jim Hiller walked into Calgary expecting a hostile crowd. Instead, Maple Leafs fans made their presence impossible to ignore.

Monday night's matchup between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Calgary Flames delivered an unexpected scene inside the Scotiabank Saddledome, and it had nothing to do with the scoreboard.

Loud "Go Leafs Go" chants echoed through the building during the opening period, with Toronto supporters making themselves heard deep inside enemy territory.

The moment quickly attracted attention online, as footage showed just how noticeable the visiting fan base had become in Calgary's own building.

For Matthews and his teammates, that kind of reception on the road is unusual. For the Flames, hearing the opposition's supporters take over the atmosphere is hardly ideal.

The chants were already ringing out with the game still scoreless early in the first period. Toronto hadn't even needed a goal to get its supporters going.

Maple Leafs fans create an awkward scene for Calgary

The timing made the situation even more remarkable. Monday marked Toronto's final regular-season visit to the Saddledome before Calgary moves into its new arena next season.

As the puck moved through the neutral zone, the visiting supporters' chants could be heard clearly over the broadcast.

Toronto entered the matchup riding a four-game winning streak, while Calgary was looking to complete a perfect homestand against one of Canada's most recognizable franchises.

Hiller's group also arrived with considerable momentum after a convincing victory over Edmonton on Saturday, giving Leafs fans plenty of reasons to feel confident.

Matthews had another personal milestone within reach, entering the contest just one point away from reaching 800 career NHL points.

But the crowd reaction became a story of its own. Calgary supporters were supposed to enjoy another home-ice advantage, not compete with chants celebrating the visiting team.

For the Flames, the challenge now extends beyond stopping Toronto's attack. They also have to give their own fans something to celebrate before the night is over.
