Simon Edvinsson is emerging as a possible target for Rod Brind'Amour's Carolina Hurricanes as their attention shifts toward Detroit's blue line.

After missing out on Connor Hellebuyck, Carolina's next potential move could address a completely different position. The Hurricanes have been linked to Edvinsson, with speculation surrounding an aggressive offer sheet.

The Detroit Red Wings defenseman has become an intriguing name following comments from NHL insider Jeff Marek, who questioned whether Carolina might pursue the towering young blueliner.

Marek suggested the possibility makes considerable sense, especially with Edvinsson approaching restricted free agency this past summer and reports that Carolina had considered an offer sheet.

Jeff Marek: I really do wonder about Carolina with Simon Edvinsson, that one makes like way too much sense I think to a lot of people - The Sheet (10/23)

NHLRR: Carolina has been linked to Edvinsson dating back to June; reports suggested they thought about making an offer sheet when he became an RFA in July

Hurricanes adding Edvinsson would be perfect fit for Brind'Amour's system

For the Hurricanes, the attraction is obvious. Edvinsson brings size, mobility, and the ability to move pucks under pressure, qualities that fit Brind'Amour's demanding defensive system.

Carolina's interest becomes even more interesting when considering how aggressively the organization has approached roster improvements. Missing out on one major target doesn't necessarily mean abandoning plans for another significant addition.

Edvinsson would offer a different solution than Hellebuyck. Rather than strengthening the crease, Carolina would be investing in a young defenseman capable of becoming a major piece of its blue line.

The Red Wings would have their own concerns. Losing a defenseman with Edvinsson's upside would create another problem for a Detroit organization trying to establish a stronger defensive foundation.

An offer sheet would also force Detroit into a financial decision, with the Red Wings needing to decide whether matching Carolina's proposed terms made sense.

Carolina would have to consider the cost as well. Offer sheets can require draft-pick compensation, and pursuing Edvinsson would mean balancing immediate roster improvement against future assets.

There is also an important distinction between interest and action. Marek's comments have fueled speculation, but they don't establish that the Hurricanes have submitted an offer or entered formal negotiations.

Still, Edvinsson's name entering the conversation gives Carolina fans something worth watching. If the Hurricanes decide to pursue him aggressively, Detroit could face an unexpected challenge to its blue-line plans.
