Mikko Rantanen is playing under Glen Gulutzan while the Dallas Stars get pulled into a loud off-ice storm in Plano.

The issue is no longer just where the Stars may skate after their American Airlines Center lease ends in 2031.

Plano ISD can contribute up to $250 million toward the proposed arena project tied to The Shops at Willow Bend redevelopment.

That number landed hard because the money is connected to school tax revenue, not a normal arena-ticket surcharge.

"Plano public schools plan to contribute $250M in tax revenue to the Dallas Stars' future billion-dollar arena.

The funds would come from recapture, which is money property-rich school districts give back to the state to be distributed to poorer schools."

Plano officials have pushed the plan through a Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone, with the city side tied to roughly $700 million in proposed public backing.

The school district says the contribution would come from new revenue that would mostly have gone to the state through recapture.

Dallas Stars face a public funding firestorm

That explanation has not calmed the hockey world, because fans see one phrase first: public schools helping fund a billion-dollar arena.

The district has projected a contribution window of up to $250 million over an estimated 18 years, with a possible $438 million return over that span.

But projections are not guarantees, and that is where the backlash has gained speed.

Plano residents still have a major say, with Proposition A set for the Nov. 3 ballot on venue taxes tied to the project.

For the Stars, this was supposed to be a long-term home-ice power play: a hockey-specific arena, a new entertainment district, and control over their future.

Instead, the story has turned into a national debate about school districts, recapture money, public subsidies, traffic, and whether NHL teams should need this kind of help.

The Stars are still a contender on the ice, but this controversy is now sitting beside the roster as a franchise-defining issue.

And unless Plano voters fully buy the pitch, the next chapter of Dallas hockey could be shaped less by the crease than by tax policy.
