A viral mock trade pitched Monday sends Connor Zary and Zach Whitecloud from the Calgary Flames to Toronto for Miles Wood and futures.
The proposal from Between The Blue Lines racked up 88.1K views. Toronto lands a 25-year-old forward and a 29-year-old defenceman, while Calgary takes Wood, the rights to Tyler Hopkins and two picks.
Those picks? A 2027 second-rounder and a 2029 third. Who says no?
Calgary should. And it isn't close.
Yes, the Flames are a mess. They're 0-5-0, sit 32nd overall and carry a -19 goal differential heading into tonight's game in Anaheim.
Ryan Huska's group has scored more than two goals exactly once all season. The losing streak sits at seven.
But a rotten start is exactly when a GM gets talked into a bad deal. Zary carries a $3,775,000 cap hit and has dressed for just 2 of Calgary's 5 games, with one assist.
Toronto's thin blue line makes Zach Whitecloud the real prize
The Leafs are already short on the back end. Chris Tanev is on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, expected out until at least Oct. 19.
That leaves Jim Hiller leaning on Morgan Rielly, Jake McCabe, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Darren Raddysh and Troy Stecher. Rielly leads that group with 4 assists.
Whitecloud hasn't exactly forced his way into anyone's plans. He has no points through five games and carries a -6 rating.
Fair caveat. Almost every Flame looks bad right now, and rookie Zayne Parekh went minus-10 over the same stretch.
Then there's Wood. The 31-year-old winger posted 8 goals and 14 points in 54 games with Columbus last season, finishing minus-10.
His 2026-27 line shows time with the AHL's Toronto Marlies. His $2,500,000 cap hit runs through 2028-29.
Moving him is like handing your neighbour the treadmill that's been drying laundry in your basement, then asking for his snowblower in return.
Toronto clears term and adds two NHL bodies. Calgary gets a winger it doesn't need plus a pair of mid-round lottery tickets.
Picks are nice. Picks don't fix a team scoring 1.6 goals a night, and they don't replace a 25-year-old forward who's still figuring out his game.
For Toronto, the timing is tidy. The Leafs sit 3-2-1 after Saturday's 6-3 win in Colorado and play tonight in Utah.
These two clubs haven't met yet this season. The Leafs visit Calgary on Oct. 26, and that night just got a little more interesting.
Toronto would sign this tomorrow. Whether Craig Conroy, staring at a winless October, ever feels tempted to pick up the phone is the part nobody can answer yet.

Should Craig Conroy hang up on any offer for Connor Zary built around Miles Wood and mid-round picks?
