Sam Montembeault went down at Canadiens practice Wednesday, leaving head coach Martin St-Louis with an immediate crease problem.

The sequence was alarming because there was no obvious contact before Montembeault appeared to injure his right leg. He suddenly had trouble moving comfortably and the session quickly became secondary.

For Montreal, that's a brutal development at practice. Losing a goaltender during a routine workout instantly changes the conversation from preparation to availability.

There was also nothing in the sequence that looked like a player simply shaking off a minor bump. Montembeault's reaction and difficulty getting himself off the ice made the moment much more concerning.

That still doesn't establish the severity of the injury. There is no confirmed diagnosis in the material available, and the Canadiens' next update will matter far more than any first impression.

But the eye test was rough: Montembeault struggled toward the bench, bent forward over the boards and needed assistance while clearly favoring his right leg.

Martin St-Louis suddenly has a crease issue

This is where St-Louis' day changes fast. A practice plan can be rewritten in seconds when the goaltender expected to handle meaningful NHL work suddenly can't continue.

The Canadiens now have to determine whether this was simply a frightening moment or an absence that forces an actual roster adjustment. Until that answer arrives, the crease carries real uncertainty.

Montembeault's injury also creates an immediate workload question. Goaltending depth looks very different when one option is removed, even temporarily, and Montreal can't treat that possibility casually.

What makes the scene tougher is the apparent non-contact nature of the play. There wasn't a collision or obvious external impact that explained why Montembeault suddenly went down.

That doesn't automatically make the injury serious, but it does leave Montreal waiting on an evaluation instead of an easy explanation.

For St-Louis, the next decision may come before the next puck drop. If Montembeault can't dress, Montreal's coaching staff will have to reshape its goaltending plan immediately.

The Canadiens can only wait for the medical update now. The visual was concerning, the timing was awful, and one ordinary practice suddenly left Montreal facing a much bigger question in net.
