Connor Hellebuyck is suddenly tied to Mike Babcock's Oilers after a fresh report opened the door to a massive Edmonton possibility.

David Pagnotta said Sunday that he believes Hellebuyck would seriously consider joining the Oilers if Edmonton found a realistic path to make it happen.

That is the part that should grab attention. The suggestion isn't that Edmonton has a deal lined up, but that one of the NHL's biggest names in net could be receptive.

Pagnotta also pointed directly at the obstacle. He doesn't currently see a clear route unless the discussion involves moving significant players out of Edmonton.

Hellebuyck remains with the Winnipeg Jets, and his contract alone makes any theoretical move difficult. His $8,500,000 cap hit ranks third among NHL goaltenders.

David Pagnotta tells me on TheMugNHL Show that he thinks Connor Hellebuyck would be open to joining the Edmonton Oilers.

“I do think that Hellebuyck would seriously consider going to Edmonton. But, I don't see a pathway there, unless… you're talking about players nobody…

Edmonton already carries several massive commitments. Connor McDavid counts for $12,500,000 against the cap, while Leon Draisaitl is at $14,000,000.

Edmonton would need to make major room

That instantly turns this from a simple goaltending discussion into a roster construction question. Edmonton couldn't treat Hellebuyck like a minor upgrade around the edges.

A move of that size would force general manager Stan Bowman to weigh the crease against pieces elsewhere in the lineup. Moving real salary would almost certainly reshape another part of the roster.

And that's why Pagnotta's wording matters. The door may be open from the player's side, but Edmonton still needs a pathway that works financially and makes sense for Winnipeg.

For Babcock, the attraction is obvious. Adding an established starting goaltender of Hellebuyck's stature would change how the Oilers could approach high-pressure games and demanding stretches on the schedule.

The Jets would also control the conversation. Edmonton wanting Hellebuyck and Hellebuyck being open to Edmonton wouldn't be enough on their own to produce a deal.

Still, this is the kind of connection that doesn't disappear quietly. Edmonton has elite talent already in place, and any serious pursuit of Hellebuyck would signal a willingness to make a major roster swing.

For now, the biggest development is simple: Hellebuyck being open to Edmonton is reportedly on the table. The difficult part is finding a deal big enough to get him there.
