Gavin McKenna got his first taste of an NHL scrum Saturday night, and the Toronto Maple Leafs rookie didn't quite know where to put himself.

Leafslatest noted he wasn't sure what to do, calling it his first NHL dust-up.

In the clip, McKenna in No. 92 hovers on the edge of the pile, while Chris Tanev in No. 8 and Nick Paul in No. 20 lean into a pack of Senators along the boards.

A stray blue helmet and a couple of sticks sit on the ice in front of the scrum.

This is exactly how it should look for an 18-year-old three games in. Nobody needs the rookie leading the charge in week one.

It's the new guy at the office party when an argument breaks out by the coffee machine. You stand close, look supportive and hope nobody asks your opinion.

Will he jump in next time? Give him a few more weeks of these.

Gavin McKenna looks lost during his first NHL scrum with the Toronto Maple Leafs

The Leafs lost 3-2 to Ottawa, with Thomas Chabot scoring in his first game as captain.

Mike Amadio and Stephen Halliday also scored for the Senators, and Linus Ullmark stopped 27 of 29.

Kirill Marchenko and Auston Matthews scored for Toronto, and Sergei Bobrovsky took the loss.

McKenna logged 12:46 with one shot and finished at -1.

He's still looking for his first NHL point, sitting at -3 through three games on a $1,075,000 cap hit.

Ottawa lost Jake Sanderson after just 4:29 of ice time, when he appeared to aggravate an injury in the first period.

Claude Giroux had two assists for the Senators.

The penalty box stayed busy too. Easton Cowan and Marchenko each finished with four penalty minutes, while Shane Pinto, Tim Stutzle and William Eklund took two apiece for Ottawa.

The Leafs are 1-2-0 and host Nashville on Tuesday, while Ottawa visits Boston on Monday.

McKenna will figure out his role in these moments soon enough. The bigger test right now is getting that first point on the board.
