Simon Edvinsson wants a trade, but Todd McLellan and the Detroit Red Wings aren't changing course on one of their biggest young pieces.

Word of Edvinsson's preference surfaced Saturday, creating another major roster issue for a Detroit team already facing pressure around its core.

The Red Wings have since made their position public. Detroit's priority remains signing Edvinsson rather than moving the defenseman to another NHL club.

That message matters because interested teams now know where Detroit stands. Calls can come in, but the Red Wings aren't treating a trade as their preferred solution.

Edvinsson remains unsigned, and the dispute appears centered heavily on contract length. The defenseman is reportedly looking at either a shorter commitment or a long-term agreement.

Detroit has preferred the bridge-contract route, leaving the two sides without common ground. Edvinsson has returned to Sweden and is skating there while the situation remains unresolved.

Detroit refuses to give up on Edvinsson

The trade request changes the pressure around those negotiations. Edvinsson isn't simply waiting for a new contract anymore. His willingness to play elsewhere puts Detroit in a much tougher position.

Still, the Red Wings have leverage. Edvinsson is a restricted free agent, meaning another club can't simply sign him away without Detroit controlling what happens next.

That's why Detroit's public stance carries weight. The organization isn't advertising Edvinsson as available, even with his preference now out in the open.

The Red Wings also have a strong hockey reason to hold firm. Edvinsson has developed into an important part of their blue line and has played alongside Moritz Seider in major minutes.

Moving a 23-year-old defenseman with that role would create an immediate hole. Finding another young defenseman capable of handling the same deployment isn't an easy fix.

There's also a deadline hanging over the situation. If Edvinsson remains unsigned past December 1, he won't be eligible to play in the NHL this season.

That gives both sides incentive to find an answer, whether it's a contract agreement or a trade that finally ends the standoff.

For now, Detroit's announcement is clear. The Red Wings still want Simon Edvinsson in their lineup, and a trade request hasn't convinced them to abandon that plan.
