Edmonton Oilers head coach Mike Babcock may already own the funniest line of the season after turning a defensive win into a one-liner.

Asked about Edmonton's performance after a 3-1 win over the Seattle Kraken, Babcock summed up his night with four words: “Didn't give up a touchdown.”

That's peak Babcock. No long explanation, no dressing it up. Just a football reference dropped into a hockey press conference with a completely straight face.

The line lands because Edmonton's first few games have been loaded with goals. The Oilers have scored 17 while allowing 14 through their opening 3 games.

So when his team finally tightened things up against Seattle, Babcock clearly noticed. Edmonton didn't need another track meet. It needed a night where the crease wasn't under constant pressure.

In the clip, Babcock raises his right fist beside his head, pauses for effect, then delivers the punchline without cracking a smile.

The Oilers now sit at 2-0-1, and the latest win gave Babcock something he hadn't gotten much of early: a game that stayed under control defensively.

Babcock finds comedy in Edmonton's wild start

There's also something very Babcock about measuring defensive progress by whether the opponent reached football territory on the scoreboard.

Edmonton has been able to survive the early chaos because its own offence keeps answering. That can cover plenty during October, but Babcock's comment tells you exactly which side of the puck has his attention.

Against Seattle, the Oilers finally changed the rhythm. They kept the Kraken to 1 goal and didn't need their stars chasing the game from behind.

That matters for a coach whose job isn't simply to unleash Edmonton's top-end skill. Babcock has to make sure this group can win when the game gets tighter and scoring chances dry up.

And if he keeps delivering press-conference lines like this along the way, Oilers postgames are going to become required viewing.

It's only early October, but “didn't give up a touchdown” already has a strong case as the hockey quote to beat.
