Katherine Henderson is off the IIHF council, and Hockey Canada woke up Friday morning without a seat at the international table.

The reason was blunt. She didn't get enough votes, and Canada is now without representation on the IIHF board.

The news surfaced on X through Szymon Szemberg, who called the result shocking given Canada's stature in the hockey world. Hard to argue with him there.

Szemberg added that this may be the first time in many years that Canada has been shut out. Possibly ever, though he admitted that part still needs checking.

Canada. Shut out. In hockey.

Even the hedged version is jarring. A country that sets its mood by how the national team does in late December just lost its voice in the room where the international game gets governed.

Hockey Canada now faces hard questions after a failed vote

Picture the family that flooded the backyard rink every winter getting voted off the committee that decides who skates on it. That's roughly where Canada sits today.

Every federation chases a council seat for the same reason. Whoever sits there helps set the agenda, and everyone else reads the minutes afterward.

Votes don't slip away by accident. If enough member nations passed on Hockey Canada's top executive, the message travels well beyond one meeting room.

So was this about Henderson, or about the logo on her blazer? The result alone doesn't say.

Here's the blunt version. Losing that seat is a bad look Hockey Canada can't afford, and it should sting far more inside the building than any statement will admit.

She still carries the CEO and President title at home. What that title is worth on the international circuit is suddenly a fair question.

Expect pressure on Hockey Canada to explain how a federation with this much history got outvoted, and what it plans to do before the next election.

And the rest of the hockey world won't pause while Canada regroups. The international calendar keeps moving whether Hockey Canada has a seat or not.

The harder part is the waiting. Until Canada gets back on that council, decisions shaping its game will be made in a room where nobody from Canada is sitting at the table.
