The Toronto Marlies locked up captain Logan Shaw on Thursday afternoon with a one-year AHL extension that begins in the 2027-28 season.
Read that start date again. The Marlies just booked their captain a full season before the new deal even takes effect.
It's an AHL contract, which keeps the Maple Leafs' cap sheet completely out of it. No NHL dollars change hands here.
That's no small detail in this organization. Auston Matthews carries a $13,250,000 cap hit, and William Nylander checks in at $11,500,000.
AHL captains carry a strange workload. They run a locker room that never stops changing, with call-ups, reassignments and teenagers learning pro hockey on the fly.
Picture the shift manager at a packed diner on a Friday night. Nobody tips him, but the whole kitchen falls apart the night he calls in sick.
Jim Hiller's Leafs lean on kids while the Marlies hold the fort
Up at the NHL level, the Maple Leafs sit at 1-1-0 under Jim Hiller after edging the Islanders 2-1 on Wednesday night.
That win came one night after a 3-2 home loss to the Canadiens. Not the cleanest back-to-back to open a season.
The kids are already in the mix. Easton Cowan, 21, has three points through two games, including a power-play goal and the game-winner.
Gavin McKenna's opening week has been bumpier. The 18-year-old has been held without a point and sits at minus-2.
That's the pipeline running through Shaw's room. Any young forward who gets sent down to sharpen his game lands under the captain's watch first.
And this extension is the right call. Locking in a room leader early is cheap insurance, and the Marlies didn't wait for the market to set the price.
So what's the catch? An AHL-only deal means any trip to the NHL for Shaw would require a new contract first.
The Maple Leafs host the Senators on Saturday and the Predators on Tuesday. Then comes a three-game road trip through Vegas, Colorado and Utah.
The Marlies have their captain through 2027-28. Whether anyone upstairs ever needs him is a question nobody answered Thursday.
