Connor Hellebuyck never told the Winnipeg Jets he'd only accept a trade to a U.S. team. That's the word from Frank Seravalli on Wednesday afternoon.

Speaking on The Nielson Show, Seravalli pushed back hard on the idea that Canadian clubs were shut out of any Hellebuyck conversation. "I don't think it's set in stone, I really don't," he said.

So much for the tidy version. The easy read on this situation had the Jets shopping their franchise goalie exclusively to American markets.

Seravalli's actual reporting is messier, and more interesting. "I don't think he's ever said to the Jets, 'I'm only going to a U.S. team,'" he said.

Nobody is selling the Canadian angle as a dream scenario, either. Seravalli was clear that playing north of the border still isn't Hellebuyck's preference.

But a preference and a hard no are very different animals in trade talks. One narrows the market, while the other cuts it down before a single call goes out.

Think of a homeowner who'd rather sell to an out-of-state buyer but still takes every showing. That keeps the listing open and the price honest.

Canadian teams aren't locked out of the Hellebuyck market

That matters for Kevin Cheveldayoff. A goalie carrying an $8,500,000 cap hit is a tough contract to move with six Canadian rivals crossed off the call sheet.

Only Igor Shesterkin and Andrei Vasilevskiy carry bigger numbers in the crease. Contenders who can absorb that money aren't lining up by the dozen, regardless of the flag outside the rink.

Seravalli also noted the Winnipeg netminder has been "way more flexible" than other players who've faced similar decisions. That's a quiet shot at the narrative that he's been dictating terms.

The photo attached to the report didn't help the U.S.-only theory fade quietly. There's the Jets goaltender draped in the Stars and Stripes, mouth wide open, celebrating in a USA sweater.

Here's the blunt truth, though. Moving the backbone of this roster would be a bad trade for Winnipeg, no matter which country the return comes from.

The Jets dropped their last two exhibition games. The final one was a 5-2 loss in Colorado on September 25.

Picture that crease without its anchor. Now picture it on a road trip.

Winnipeg opens Friday night at home against the Boston Bruins, then heads to Detroit on Sunday. Boston arrives fresh off a 3-0 shutout of the Rangers.

And Scott Arniel gets to start the year fielding questions about his goalie's future instead of his power play. Not exactly the locker room vibe any coach wants before puck drop.

Seravalli didn't say a Canadian deal is coming. He said the door was never closed, which is a very different headline.

For a Canadian GM with cap room and a goaltending problem, that's all the invitation needed. The real question is whether Cheveldayoff even wants to take those calls.
