The Maple Leafs have a conditioning controversy on their hands, and Kirill Marchenko is sitting right in the middle of it heading into opening week.
On Monday night, Andrew Raycroft said on NHL Radio that the Russian winger was one of the players who upset head coach Rick Bowness by showing up to training camp out of shape.
The pushback landed fast. A little over an hour later, agent Dan Milstein fired back on social media.
"Kirill's conditioning has NEVER been a topic," Milstein wrote, before taking a pointed shot at Raycroft's relevance.
That's a sharp jab. And it hands Toronto a noisy storyline just one day before the Montreal Canadiens come to town for the regular-season opener Tuesday.
The production doesn't exactly scream a guy who's coasting. He put up 67 points in 76 games last season.
The year before was even louder, with 31 goals and a +29 rating that ranked among the best numbers on the roster.

Here's where it gets uncomfortable. He's playing out a $3,850,000 cap hit this season before a $12,500,000 number takes over through 2032-33 with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Think of it like a new hire who signs a huge offer letter, then strolls into orientation winded. Nobody cares about the résumé that week. They care about the first impression.
So who's telling the truth?
Nothing in the report puts words directly in Bowness' mouth. It's secondhand, relayed over the radio, and Raycroft said the winger was one of several players, without naming the rest.

Bowness took over behind the Columbus bench in January. Camp is where a coach plants his flag, and a public conditioning story is one very large flag.
Milstein going after Raycroft's relevance was a mistake, though. Attack the report, not the messenger. A personal shot only guarantees the story lives through another news cycle.

The trade itself looks fine for both teams. It's seems like a win win scenario.
Career-wise, the 2018 second-round pick sits at 102 goals over 292 NHL games. That résumé buys some benefit of the doubt. Not unlimited, though.
