Nick Blankenburg signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs for $1.40 million, and the timing lines up almost perfectly with the club's cap puzzle.
Per PuckPedia, that contract puts Toronto $3,808,241 over the cap. That's by design, and it's almost exactly where the Leafs want to be.
The key is long-term injured reserve. Max Domi, listed as the LTIR candidate, carries a $3.75 million cap hit.
Add William Villeneuve on season-opening IR at $68,359, and Toronto can be up to $3,818,359 over the cap.
That leaves the Leafs just $10,118 shy of an optimal LTIR capture. In a league where teams scrape for every dollar, that's close to perfect.
Why does it matter? Because LTIR rewards teams that build right up to the limit before the season starts.

PuckPedia had projected a cheaper route. At $1.34 million, Blankenburg would have left Toronto $3.75 million over with no cap space to start the year.
He ended up earning a bit more than that projection, and the extra money still fits.
The PTO signee earned it on the ice, too. He picked up a power-play assist in 14:01 during Wednesday's 4-2 win in Ottawa.
The Lorentz move is baked into the numbers as well. Steven Lorentz was waived and sent down, which is part of how the Leafs got here.
Other paths were on the table. PuckPedia floated sending waivers-exempt Easton Cowan down, which would have required someone like Dakota Joshua or Nick Paul on IR.
It's clever work, but it says plenty about how tight this roster is. A team shouldn't need accounting gymnastics in September to ice a full lineup.
It's parallel parking a bus with a coin's width to spare. Impressive, until somebody opens a door.
The top of the sheet explains a lot. Auston Matthews carries a $13,250,000 cap hit, and William Nylander sits at $11,500,000.
Jim Hiller's group opens Tuesday at home against Montreal.
The margins are razor thin. One more injury or roster shuffle, and Toronto's cap crew will be back at the whiteboard before Blankenburg plays a regular-season shift.
