Jeffrey Viel didn't need long to show the Lightning what they're getting, going off for five against the Panthers in Florida on Saturday.
Lafferty ran Viel into the boards by the benches, and the gloves came off right after.
Both players went to the box with five-minute majors. Lafferty picked up an extra 10-minute misconduct on top of that.
Eduardo Encina summed it up perfectly. "Jeff Viel will bring a lot, including this," he wrote.
That edge is the whole resume. The winger has 232 penalty minutes in 99 NHL games.
His next regular-season game will be the 100th of his NHL career.

The Lightning have him at a $2,500,000 cap hit through 2030-31.
That's a big jump from the $775,000 he carried last season.
He split that season between Boston and Anaheim, then played 12 playoff games for the Ducks.
He scored twice during that playoff run.
The Lightning are his fourth NHL team after San Jose, Boston and Anaheim.
His busiest NHL season came with the Sharks in 2021-22, when he piled up 114 penalty minutes in 34 games.
Five years of term for a player with 15 career NHL points is a lot. This contract only makes sense if nights like Saturday matter as much to Tampa as goals do.
Signing a guy like Viel is like hiring a bouncer for a busy bar. Nobody pays him for the music, but everybody behaves a little better when he's standing at the door.
Before the pros, he scored 39 goals in 58 games for Acadie-Bathurst in 2017-18.
He then posted three straight AHL seasons of at least 142 penalty minutes.
The rivalry already had some heat. The Panthers beat the Lightning 5-3 in Tampa on Thursday.
Paul Maurice's Panthers open the regular season Tuesday in Carolina. Jon Cooper's group starts Thursday in New York against the Rangers.
The first meeting that counts comes November 28 in Florida. Lafferty will have plenty of time to think about this one before then.
