Dylan Larkin has reportedly made his choice regarding involving the Montreal Canadiens

Dylan Larkin has drawn a hard line that leaves Martin St-Louis and the Canadiens staring at a closed trade door.

Darren Dreger reports that Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes has continued talking with several teams, but the Larkin situation has apparently reached its limit.

According to Dreger, the “ship has sailed” because Larkin doesn't appear willing to reconsider his position on playing for a Canadian team.

That changes the conversation in Montreal. This is no longer simply about whether Hughes can build an attractive trade package for Detroit.

Larkin would bring major pedigree down the middle. The Red Wings captain has recorded 643 points over 808 regular-season games, production that explains why Montreal would have interest.

But acquiring a player at that level only works if the player is prepared to embrace the destination. Dreger's report strongly suggests Montreal doesn't have that opening with Larkin.

The Canadiens can spend their time and assets elsewhere rather than chase a situation in which the player himself remains an obstacle.

There's an important distinction here for Canadiens fans. Larkin's reported stance can be frustrating without automatically making him a problematic player.

Players with contractual control often have preferred destinations, and Larkin appears to have drawn a clear geographical line. Montreal simply lands on the wrong side of it.

For Hughes, that clarity could actually help. Montreal can move toward other centers who would welcome the market instead of trying to change the mind of Detroit's captain.

Larkin also remains under contract with the Red Wings through the 2030-31 season, giving Detroit plenty of control over the broader situation even if trade discussions develop.

The bigger message from Dreger's report is that Montreal's pursuit appears blocked by something no trade offer can fix. If Larkin doesn't want Canada, adding prospects or picks doesn't solve that issue.

So while the news stings for a Canadiens team searching for another major piece, there's little value in forcing the fit.

Montreal needs players ready for everything that comes with that sweater, market and locker room. Based on Dreger's latest information, Larkin appears ready to make his choice clear.
