Connor Hellebuyck has reportedly opened the door to Montreal, giving Martin St-Louis and the Canadiens a striking trade storyline.
The development comes from a report attributed to Toronto Sun columnist Steve Simmons, with Habs Fanatics relaying that Hellebuyck would report to Montreal “without hesitation” if the Winnipeg Jets traded him to the Canadiens.
That wording matters. This isn't simply another hypothetical linking an established NHL name to Montreal because of market size or fan interest.
The report points directly to Hellebuyck's willingness to accept Montreal as his destination. There is no indication in the post that a trade is being negotiated, but one potential obstacle apparently wouldn't be there.

For Kent Hughes, that distinction changes the conversation. A player being willing to come to Montreal gives the Canadiens something concrete to consider if Winnipeg ever decides to explore a major move.
Hellebuyck's position also carries weight because goaltending decisions at this level can reshape an entire roster plan. Montreal wouldn't be looking at a depth addition. This would represent a major commitment to the crease.
Montreal suddenly has a real opening
The Canadiens have spent years building around a younger core, with Hughes controlling the direction of the roster and St-Louis shaping how that group plays. Adding Hellebuyck would signal a much more aggressive stage.
There would still be enormous questions before anything could move. Winnipeg general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff would control the Jets' side of the equation, including whether Hellebuyck was available at all and what Montreal would need to surrender.
That makes the reported willingness more significant than an ordinary rumor, but it doesn't make a deal imminent. There is a major difference between accepting a destination and actively being moved there.
For Montreal, the important part is that the city apparently wouldn't need to be sold to Hellebuyck. According to the report, his answer would already be clear if Winnipeg made that call.
That removes one layer of uncertainty from a potential blockbuster and puts the focus where it belongs: the price, Winnipeg's intentions and Montreal's appetite for a massive roster move.
The Canadiens don't have a Hellebuyck trade in front of them today. But if his availability ever changes, Montreal now looks like a destination he would seriously accept.
That alone makes this one worth watching.
